Key points for temporary fixed prosthesis:

These prostheses are prepared by your physician using CAD/CAM systems during the session in which your tooth is abraded for crowning. Although they may not be aesthetic enough, they are useful against cold and hot sensitivities and they also protect your teeth. In some cases, temporary prostheses are prepared in the laboratory, and fixed to your teeth the next day. The appearance of those that are prepared in the lab.

Problems that may occur after temporary fixed prosthesis treatment and possible solutions:

Prosthesis fracture

If your prosthesis is broken please contact us to repair or reproduce it. If your teeth under the prosthesis are alive, too hot or cold food may cause sensitivities. That’s why it is better for you to avoid them. It is possible to repair the broken part in some cases. It would be useful to bring the broken piece with you.

Local anesthesia that causes numbness is usually applied during root canal treatment. Because of this numbness, the patient may bite and damage his/her soft tissues such as tongue, lips and cheeks. Extremely cold-hot beverages should be avoided at the same time, which can damage soft tissues.

Remember that temporary crowns are usually made from acrylic (plastic) and are not very solid. You can easily eat soft and semi solid food. Eating hard food may cause your prosthesis to break or crack.

Soft food: all liquids, soup, yogurt, pasta, egg, rice, wet crumb, boiled vegetables, pudding, etc.

Semi solid food: All kinds of meat and vegetable meals cooked in water, tomato, soft apple, grilled chicken, peanuts, chocolate, etc.

Solid food: quince, green apple, white chickpeas, chocolate taken from the fridge, hard bread crust, well-cooked hard-fiber meat, etc.

You may get used to your temporary prosthesis and can meet your daily needs with it. Bu don’t forget that it can be easily broken and damage your teeth. It is extremely important for your dental health to make the permanent prosthesis fixed within the time period stated by your dentist.

Brush your teeth with electronic or manual toothbrush twice a day. You can use mouthwash (eg. Listerine). Trying to clean your teeth with toothpicks may cause your crown to come out. Instead  you can use dental floss. Do not push too hard if it is difficult for dental floss to get between two teeth. One of the best ways to clear your teeth is to use a dental water flosser (eg. Oral-b oxyjet). These devices pressurize the water and air between the teeth.

During treatment sessions, the temporary prostheses are not fixed with a very strong adhesive so that they can be removed and placed several times. This means that your temporary prosthesis may dislocate. In that case, you can visit our clinic without an appointment. If you are not in Istanbul, you can visit a nearby dentist.

It is normal to feel uncomfortable for a while after the prosthesis is newly fixed. Temporary prostheses are generally not as good as permanent prostheses, and some rough areas can be found. Every new substance that is put in your mouth (even a filling) will cause some disturbance for the soft tissues and tongue. In about a week, your tongue will get used to the new prosthesis. If you have a rough and jaggy edge / surface that hurts your tongue, try not to touch the area with your tongue and visit our clinic as soon as possible. The problem can be solved with a little abrasion and / or polishing process.

This is usually felt if the prosthesis is high. It is because of the fact that the prosthesis contacts before your natural teeth. As the pressure in the mouth will concentrate on a single point, pain will occur in that region. In that case, you should immediately consult your dentist. Until the problem is fixed, try to eat soft food.

Soft tissues such as cheeks and tongue grow towards empty areas that have been toothless for many years. If a problem such as biting soft tissues occurs, a more rounded and polished form will be given to the edges of the prosthesis. If it is very uncomfortable for you, please contact your dentist immediately.

Temporary prosthesis are not fixed like the permanent ones and thus, sometimes some sort of leakage may occur and cause tingling. The gap between the prosthesis and the gum can cause cold / hot sensitivity. Such sensitivities will disappear after the permanent prosthesis is located and fixed with the original adhesive. If you have cold / hot sensitivity, you should avoid too cold or too hot food and drinks.

Slight tingling may be normal. But if you have pain that forces you to take painkillers please contact your dentist.
