Before treatment begins, it is important that systematic diseases such as heart condition, diabetes, blood pressure, infectious diseases such as hepatitis, and others as well medicines used should be shared with your physicians. Your treatment plan will be prepared in the light of this information. Please read carefully the following information about the treatments you may receive, direct all your questions to your physician, and sign the form if you agree to have a treatment.
X-ray films are used in diagnosis and treatment by dentists. Patients are exposed to radiation during medical X-ray examination. For this reason, it is risky for pregnancy or any possibility of pregnancy. In that case, inform your dentist and avoid X-ray.
Anesthesia blocks the nerves that connect a particular body part or region to the brain, preventing the nerves from carrying pain signals to your brain by using anesthetic materials.
Complications: With local anesthesia, complications such as teeth sensitivity, decrease in the openness of the mouth, transient facial paralysis, facial swelling-blushing-bruising, and loss of sense and function can occur. These situations are temporary and need not be anxious. The duration of sense loss varies between 1-4 hours depending on the anesthetic used, the application area, and the anatomical structure of the patient. In case of an allergic reaction to anesthesia, immediate intervention is required. The patient must tell the dentist whether he/she is allergic to any substance such as penicillin before the treatment begins.
Tooth extraction may be a solution for teeth that cannot be treated, that root canal treatment was unsuccessful, for swinging teeth, for prosthesis treatment or for roots that rest in patient’s mouth. Extraction is made after local anesthesia and there is no alternative for this treatment.
After extraction, the pad that is placed on the tooth cavity should be tightly bitten for at least 30 minutes. Do not eat anything for 2-3 hours, and then make sure that no food residue rests in the tooth cavity and pay special attention to oral hygiene. For two days after tooth extraction, hot and cold foods should not be consumed. You shall not smoke during this period. Do not take a hot bath, do not enter the Turkish bath and saunas. Do not use your teeth that are close to the surgical area to chew. Drink plenty of water. Drink a glass of water especially after you have eaten something to clean your teeth. Avoid drinking gaseous, acidic drinks such as alcohol and cola. Smoking is not allowed. You may feel pain after tooth extraction. Painkiller prescribed by the physician should be used as indicated. In the following days, if the pain persists, you should consult your dentist.
Complications: During tooth extraction, the tooth may break or neighbor tooth may be damaged. After tooth extraction, prolonged bleeding, loss of sense, extreme sensitivity, decrease in the openness of the mouth, infection may be seen. In cases who have structural problems, factures in jawbones may occur.
Tartar appears with sedimentation of saliva minerals on the bacterial plaque formed on the teeth. There is no alternative treatment for scaling. Tartar is scaled by your dentist with special equipment. If dental scaling is not applied, bleeding in gums, bad breath, regional sensitivities, infection and loss of tooth due to bone resorption may occur. To stop the formation of tartar, bacterial plaque should be prevented, the teeth must be regularly brushed, tooth brushes and dental floss should be used.
Complications: After the treatment, hot-cold sensitivity may occur and the patient may feel space between the teeth. As swinging teeth may not be realized because of excessive tartar, patient’s teeth may swing after scaling.
Your dentist will remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area and fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material to restore the tooth back to its normal function and shape. There is no alternative treatment for dental filling. If this treatment is not applied to the related tooth, the decay may cause tooth loss. For deep decays, root canal treatment may be required.
Complications: After filling treatment, depending on the depth of the cavity, fracture, filling drop out, hot-cold sensitivity and pain may occur. After each filling treatment, more or less there is a probability of root canal treatment.
ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
It is the filling of the root canal of the tooth when the decay goes deep to the nerve or if the nerve comes off with the fracture of tooth. The nerves that cause pain are taken off after anesthesia and the cavity is filled with the filling material. If this treatment is not applied when needed, acute pain, infection and tooth loss may occur. Root canal treatment is the last option to keep the tooth in mouth. Its alternative is tooth extraction. You may feel a pressure pain on the filled tooth for a couple of days after root canal treatment. Medication prescribed by your dentist has to be taken. In cases such as acute pain or face swelling patient has to inform the dentist. Patient should not eat hard food till the treatment ends.
Complications: Canal file can break and stick into the canal; sensitivity to canal cleaning solution may occur; fragility of the tooth may increase; pain after treatment can be seen. It the structural problems of the tooth may not be seen through X-ray examination, tooth extraction may be required.
Tooth whitening is the removal of yellowing, darkness and stains that occur on the surface of teeth through tooth whitening materials that are applied to the surface of the teeth, without the teeth being abraded or covered with any other artificial material. After tooth whitening, it is advised not to consume extremely cold or too hot foods or beverages for a few days. If the physician gives any nutrition program, this should be respected. Especially the consumption of coloring foods should be avoided at least two or three days, ideally one week after whitening.
Complications: After tooth whitening, many patients experience sensitivity at different levels. These sensitivities are transitory and decrease with time.
It is a kind of prosthesis which is made with the aim of replacing the missing teeth, fixing the excessively damaged teeth and correcting the color and shape deformations for aesthetic purposes. Fixed prostheses can be applied to single (crown) or more than one tooth (bridge) Alternatives to fixed prosthesis treatment are removable prosthesis and implant treatments. It is extremely important that you discuss your aesthetic and functional expectations with your physician in detail before the treatment.
In order to fix the crowns and / or bridges to the existing tooth or teeth, size of the tooth must be reduced according to certain rules and local anesthesia must be performed at the first stage. After the reduction process is completed, the measurement is taken to make the appropriate crowning. In the next few days tingling may occur in the teeth. At the final session, the prosthesis is checked for conformity in patient’s mouth and it is bonded to the tooth/teeth temporarily or permanently according to the dentist’s recommendation. If you have a temporary crown, you need to come to the next appointment. If you do not come to the appointment given to you, your crown may come off, break; you may swallow it; or the teeth under the crown may decay.
The most important factor affecting the life of bridge prostheses is the durability of the teeth that will carry the bridge. Bridge prostheses made on healthy teeth can be used for many years. The lifespan of bridge prostheses that are made on worn teeth may be shorter, depending on the damage. After the treatment, if you follow your dentist’s oral care recommendations and come to your checkup appointments, you may increase the lifespan and comfort of your prosthesis.
Complications: If there is an existing prosthesis, cracks and fractures may occur on the prosthesis and tooth while removing it. If the tooth is not strong enough, it may be extracted totally. After prosthesis application, there may be sensitivity in the teeth, pain and bleeding in the gums. During the abrasion of the teeth, nerve openings may occur and root canal treatment may be required.
Removable prosthesis is a treatment that can be applied in case of a complete or partial loss of teeth. If it is not applied in required cases, tooth augmentation and displacement, damage on bones and gums, problems of temporomandibular joint and stomach may occur. Its alternatives are fixed prosthesis and implant treatment.
Complications: In addition to the complications of fixed prosthesis, dents in mouth, acute infections, allergy due to materials used and swinging of some teeth may occur. Dental decays can occur in the teeth to which the hooks are attached in partial prosthesis when oral care is not given due care. Food residues may accumulate under the prosthesis.
