X-ray films are used in diagnosis and treatment by dentists. Patients are exposed to radiation during medical X-ray examination. For this reason, it is risky for pregnancy or any possibility of pregnancy. In that case, inform your dentist and avoid X-ray.
Anesthesia blocks the nerves that connect a particular body part or region to the brain, preventing the nerves from carrying pain signals to your brain by using anesthetic materials.
Complications: With local anesthesia, complications such as teeth sensitivity, decrease in the openness of the mouth, transient facial paralysis, facial swelling-blushing-bruising, and loss of sense and function can occur. These situations are temporary and need not be anxious. The duration of sense loss varies between 1-4 hours depending on the anesthetic used, the application area, and the anatomical structure of the patient. In case of an allergic reaction to anesthesia, immediate intervention is required. The patient must tell the dentist whether he/she is allergic to any substance such as penicillin before the treatment begins.
WHAT IS AN IMPLANT TREATMENT
Implants made from titanium similar to the tooth root are placed in the jawbone and prosthesis is planned to complete the missing teeth. The successes of implant treatment have been demonstrated with long-term follow-up scientific studies. Adequate number of implants with appropriate diameter and length that are placed with an atraumatic surgical procedure can support implant over prosthesis designed for proper conditions after a satisfactory recovery period with a 99 % success rate over a 10-year period. This success rate is quite high when compared to other dental treatments but the necessary criteria should be followed to reach such a rate. Fixed and removable prostheses are alternatives to implant supported prostheses. Patient should decide his/her treatment alternative by taking into consideration the recommendations of the dentist and the advantages/disadvantages of the treatment.
CONTENT OF IMPLANT TREATMENT
Implants a placed in the jawbone with a surgical operation. First a cut is opened at the soft tissue where the implant will be placed. The bone is made open and an implant hole is prepared by using special drills. Then the implant screw is placed into that hole and the gum is stitched. If the length, width and quality of bone is not enough for the operation, bone graft and some other surgical operations may be applied. If there is not enough space at the upper jaw due to sinus prolapse sinus lifting may be required.
Usually 2-4 months or sometimes more recovery time is required in order the implant to fuse to the bone. The number of existing implants, their position, loads they can carry are taken into consideration before planning the patient-specific prosthesis. Gum shaper is installed and an appointment to take the oral impression is arranged for a couple of days later. Pieces that support the prosthesis are inserted and the prosthesis process is continued.
After the operation, complications such as bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, difficulty in opening the mouth, loss of sense at the tissues and variation in senses can occur. In addition to these, a damage at the neighbor tooth or sinus and nasal base injuries can be seen. Infections may cause the loss of both the implant and the healthy bone tissue surrounding it. If the implant does not fuse with the bone, it may be removed.
Pain, swelling and bruising that appear after the surgical operation are expected to disappear in a week. If not, the patient has to contact the dentist.
POINTS TO CONSIDER
Prescription recommended by the dentist should be regularly taken during and after the treatment. It is recommended that the patient use dental floss and mouth shower as well as regular tooth brushing, with great care for oral care after surgical treatment. During the waiting period, the diet indicated by the physician should be observed and if the patient has a temporary prosthesis, it has to be used according to the directions given by the dentist. If the temporary prosthesis is broken or if it causes pressure over the tooth and the implant, if the patient feels pain at the tooth and implant area under the prosthesis after one week, he/she must contact the dentist immediately. Smoking decreases the success rate of implant treatment. If the patient misses the latest appointment date for prosthesis placement, the success rate decreases.
